2 Die in Cherokee County Crash on Interstate 85 near Gaffney
Cherokee County, South Carolina – A fiery multi-vehicle accident has claimed the lives of two people Thursday night in Cherokee County, authorities said.
A 2018 Volvo tractor-trailer was heading northbound on Interstate 85 near Gaffney at about 10:22 p.m. March 18, when it struck another tractor-trailer that was stopped for traffic in a construction area.
After the impact, the first tractor-trailer side-swiped a Ford pickup and then crashed into the back of a Nissan sedan, which was then pushed into a third tractor-trailer. The third tractor-trailer was pushed into the fourth tractor-trailer.
As a result of the collision, the Nissan caught fire, trapping the driver inside the vehicle. The first tractor-trailer also caught fire.
The Nissan driver, Sherron Shenette Alexander, 50, of Gaffney, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the first tractor-trailer, Gary Parks, 61, of Kentucky, also died at the scene of the accident.
Police closed all lanes of Interstate 85 near Green River Road while the investigation and cleanup took place.
